2014 - Annapurna Circuit, Nepal

Following the 'Apple Pie Trail' through the Himalayas

The Annapurna Circuit is one of the most popular trekking routes in Nepal. The trail goes around the Annapurna massif, which has mountains that are up to 8,091 m high. The route is also known as the "Apple Pie Trail" because of the apple trees that grow in some of the areas crossed. This gives you the chance to try apple pie at almost every lodge. We walked this trail from mid-March to early April in great weather and really enjoyed it. It's a real comfort trek because you don't need to carry a tent or food. That said, it's vital to be adequately prepared, as a lack of preparation can lead to altitude sickness, which can ruin the experience (or end your life).

Unfortunately, we had to turn back from the Thorung La Pass (the highest point on the tour at 5,416 m), because gastrointestinal problems prevented us from crossing the pass. Nevertheless, it was a great tour that we can absolutely recommend (and the apple pie is also worth it - especially when you arrive in Bahundanda after a long, tough climb).

By the way: If you hear somewhere that the Annapurna circuit is dead because of the newly built road, just look for the NATT (New Annapurna Trekking Trail). This new trail avoids the road for the most part.
